New Canaan Historical Society Exhibit As We Were – 1889

Experience the fashions of 1889 as the Historical Society opens its latest costume exhibit, As We Were, in celebration of the Society’s 125th anniversary. The first meeting of the Historical Society took place on August 20, 1889, where 65 prominent New Canaan residents discussed how to maintain the town’s history. The exhibit features dresses like those that could have been worn at this initial meeting. Two residents that attended the meeting, Edna Hoyt Rogers and Henry Benjamin Rogers, were married around the same time. On display are Edna Hoyt Rogers’ wedding dress, along with several other dresses from the period. The Show runs through May 2015.

Several of the Silvermine Guild of Artists’ newest members will be exhibiting work that explores the territory between two media. Photography and glasswork, video and sound, drawing and collage, and painting and sculpture are a few of the disciplines that inform each other in this new exhibition. Silvermine’s new artists are also a surprisingly international group. Two are Brazilian artists, born in Belo Horizonte; one is from Gunma Prefecture, Japan; another was born and educated in the Croatian capital, Zagreb. The eleven new Guild Artists are: Moshe Bursuker (Purdys, NY); Robert Calafiore (West Hartford, CT); Susan Cox (Pound Ridge, NY); Edhu Nascimento (Norwalk, CT); Kyoshi Otsuka (White Plains, NY); Gina Piccirilli-Hayden (Spring Harbor, NY); Ronnie Rysz (New Haven, CT); Michele Shibley (West Springfield, MA); Dora Tomulic (Hartsdale, NY); Cris Xavier (Norwalk, CT); and Joan Zagrobelny (Newtown, CT).

The annual Tree & Wreath sale begins on Saturday November 29th, it is the Club’s largest fundraising event enabling grants of more than $1,000,000 to twenty-two local charities over the past ten years. The Exchange Club Parenting Skills Center in Stamford, whose mission is to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect, is the largest beneficiary of our fundraising efforts. The sale runs through December 22nd Kiwanis Park is located at 77 Old Norwalk Road in New Canaan.

Shoppers will also find their favorites such as gingerbread houses, doll clothes, needlepoint ornaments, infant and children’s hand knit sweaters and the very popular Gourmet Table.
