Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a whimsical musical adventure for the whole family, sure to warm hearts on cool wintry nights.
Stillwater is a nice, quiet little American town in 1938. It’s the kind of place where you can count on things never changing, and that’s the way the residents like it. Most of them, anyway.
Mr. Popper, the town housepainter, has just finished his busy season, and is longing for adventure, with dreams of escaping the quaint confines of his small-town life to explore the world he has only seen through the pages of National Geographic. Little does he know that his dreams are about to come true…just not exactly in the way that he imagined. His adventures are delivered to his doorstep in the form of a surprise package from Antarctica!
Mr. Popper’s idol, the daring adventurer Admiral Drake, has read one of Mr. Popper’s letters, and has sent his biggest fan a gift of adventure – a penguin of his very own! This fine-feathered delivery is soon joined by another from a nearby zoo, and as their penguin family grows, so too do the expenses and trouble for the Popper family, and the town of Stillwater. Looking for a way to make ends meet and still keep their exotic family intact, Mr. Popper and his family embark on a musical adventure across America.
Mr. Popper’s Penguins Book and Lyrics are written by Jody Davidson, music by Brett Schrier. It is based on the beloved children’s novel by Richard and Florence Atwater. The novel was originally published in 1938, won a Newbury Honor in 1939, and has been delighting generations of young readers ever since.
